Advice Reform Push Highlights Australia’s Life Cover Knowledge Gap

Why cover through super still needs active attention

A fresh push from the Council of Australian Life Insurers has put a familiar consumer problem back in the spotlight: many Australians have life insurance in place, but far fewer clearly understand what it does and does not cover.

According to industry research highlighted on 20 July 2026, only one in three Australians understands their life insurance products and the benefits attached to them. CALI has used the finding to renew its call for the federal government to progress financial advice reforms, arguing that households need easier access to straightforward help when making decisions about protection for illness, injury or death.

The issue matters because life cover is often held quietly through superannuation. Many workers may have default death, total and permanent disability or income protection cover attached to their fund without having actively chosen the amount, checked the definitions or considered whether it matches their current circumstances. CALI says life insurers have supported about 54,000 claims and paid almost $6 billion through group superannuation policies over the past 12 months, showing that this cover can play a significant role when families face serious disruption.

For consumers, the practical lesson is not that cover through super is inadequate. It is that default cover should not be treated as a set-and-forget safety net. A policy that seemed reasonable when you were single, renting or working fewer hours may look very different after taking on a mortgage, having children, changing income, becoming self-employed or moving into higher-risk work.

This is also where underinsurance can creep in. A member may assume they have enough protection because premiums are being deducted from super, only to discover later that the insured amount, waiting period, benefit period or policy definition does not meet their household’s needs. Others may be paying for duplicate cover across multiple funds, or may have lost cover after changes to account balance, contribution activity or eligibility.

Before making changes, Australians should review their current policy documents, beneficiary nominations, premiums, exclusions and claims definitions. It can also help to compare life insurance policies outside super to understand how standalone options differ in ownership, tax treatment, flexibility and underwriting.

The advice reform debate will continue, but households do not need to wait for legislation to get clearer on their own position. If your cover is tied to your family’s financial security, seeking professional guidance may help turn a vague safety net into a deliberate protection plan.

I only realised my super cover had changed after switching jobs, so one in three understanding it honestly sounds about right.

New research from Zurich has put a fresh spotlight on a challenge many Australian households already feel in practical terms: living longer does not always mean living healthier. Its Chronic Care Index places Australia highly among OECD countries for overall health system performance, helped by strong healthcare capacity and relatively low mortality. But the same research points to a widening gap between lifespan and healthspan, with more people spending extended periods managing chronic illness. - read more
